A Tampere la Finlandia diventa Campione del Mondo
La Finlandia si laurea Campione del Mondo battendo il Canada all’overtime, sul ghiaccio di casa, e conquista il quarto titolo. I finnici si prendono la rivincita sui nordamericani, dopo che l’anno scorso erano stati sconfitti in finale proprio all’overtime. Dopo la vittoria dell’Olimpiade Invernale, per la Finlandia arriva così un altro prestigioso successo.
Il primo periodo è equilibrato ma finisce a reti inviolate. Entrambe le squadre creano diverse occasioni, ma nessuna delle due riesce a superare il portiere avversario. Nella ripresa il Canada sfrutta subito il primo power play della serata. Friman viene spedito in panca puniti al 23:25: passano 35 secondi e Cozens trafigge Olkinuora, che vale l’1-0 canadese. La Finlandia prova a reagire, ma non trova la rete. Al 31esimo Holdden finisce in panca puniti. Primo power play anche per la Finlandia che mette sotto pressione il Canada. Nonostante 6 conclusioni, di cui 3 consecutive, Driedger è ben attento e non concede nulla. Con le squadre tornate in parità numerica, è Filppula a commettere fallo e a concedere la superiorità al Canada. Anche i nordamericani vanno vicini alla rete ma Olkinuora salva i suoi. Tornata in parità numerica la Finlandia si fa subito pericolosa. Negli ultimi minuti i finnici spingono alla ricerca del pari, che non arriva.
Ad inizio dell’ultimo periodo Roy commette fallo ed il Canada è costretto a giocare in inferiorità numerica. Sullo scadere della penalità passata indenne, sono ancora i nord americani a commettere fallo con Gregor. A 34 secondi dal termine della nuova penalità è Sillinger ad essere spedito in panca puniti. La Finlandia, in 5 contro 3, trova subito la rete del pareggio con Granlund. Il Canada cambia portiere, fuori Driedger, dentro Tomkins. I finnici hanno un minuto e mezzo ancora di superiorità numerica e ad 11 secondi dallo scadere si portano in vantaggio con Granlund. Il Canada prova a riaprire la partita, ma a segnare è ancora la Finlandia con Armia, al 54:04. A 2:12 dalla sirena Whitecloud firma la rete del 3-2, col Canada che ha tolto il portiere. Con Tomkins ancora fuori, ad 1:24 i nordamericani pareggiano con Comtois. Sul finire del periodo i canadesi sfiorano il goal vittoria. Si va all’overtime. Al 66 e 42 Manninen segna la rete della vittoria per la Finlandia che diventa il nuovo Campione del Mondo. Finisce 4 a 3.
Finland becomes World Champion in Tampere
Finland became World Champions by beating Canada in overtime, on home ice, to win their fourth title. The Finns took revenge on the North Americans, after they had been defeated in the final last year in overtime. After winning the Winter Olympics, another prestigious success came for Finland.
The first period was balanced but ended in a deadlocked net. Both teams created several chances, but neither could get past the opposing goalkeeper. In the second half, Canada immediately took advantage of the first power play of the evening. Friman was sent to the penalty box at 23:25: 35 seconds passed and Cozens pierced Olkinuora, making it 1-0 Canadian. Finland tried to react, but could not find the net. In the 31st minute Holdden ended up in the penalty box. First power play also for Finland, which put Canada under pressure. Despite six conclusions, three of which were consecutive, Driedger was very careful and conceded nothing. With the teams back in numerical parity, it is Filppula who commits a foul and concedes superiority to Canada. The North Americans also went close to scoring but Olkinuora saved his team. Back in numerical parity, Finland immediately became dangerous. In the last minutes the Finns pushed in search of an equaliser, which did not come.
At the start of the final period Roy committed a foul and Canada were forced to play in a numerical inferiority. As the penalty passed unscathed, it was again the North Americans who fouled Gregor. With 34 seconds remaining it was Sillinger who was sent to the penalty box. Finland, in 5-on-3, immediately found the equalising goal with Granlund. Canada changed goalkeeper, out of Driedger, in Tomkins. The Finns had another minute and a half of numerical superiority and with 11 seconds to go they took the lead with Granlund. Canada tried to reopen the game, but Finland scored again with Armia at 54:04. With 2:12 to go before the siren Whitecloud scored the 3-2 goal, with Canada having taken the goalie off. With Tomkins still out, at 1:24 the North Americans equalised with Comtois. Towards the end of the period, the Canadians came close to scoring the winning goal. It goes into overtime. At 66:42 Manninen scored the winning goal for Finland, which became the new World Champion. It ends 4-3.
