It happened today, 2 March 1991: the sacred day for Milanese hockey
It happened today, 2 March 1991. Hockey Club Milano Saima is Italian Champion, 31 years after the last title won by a Milanese club. The last was the one won in 1960 by the Diavoli Milano for 7 to 4 against OZO Bolzano. Milan, or rather Saima, won the title in front of 11,000 people at the Forum of Assago against Bolzano, the eternal enemy. Two points separated the two teams, in a championship that was decided at the end of the return round, and not as now after the play-off final. Milan only needed a draw, Bolzano had to win: it ended 3-3 and Saima became a legend.
In the fifth minute Perry Turnbull put the guests ahead, who found the double in the 18th minute through Martin Crepaz. Bolzano led the match 2-0 for most of the second period. Milan, however, at the 17th and 40th minute reopened the match with Kevin Lavalleee and 58 seconds later Richard Bragnalo signed the equaliser. The 2:2 lasted 10 minutes until after the start of the third period when Martin Pavlu put the South Tyroleans ahead by finding the 3:2. Five minutes passed and again Richard Bragnalo, a double for him, found the goal of the final 3:3. The Forum exploded, Milan became Italian Champions. And Saima entered the legend.
From Danilo Freri’s radio report: “… the 1991 Italian champions were Mike Zanier, Marco Capone, Bill Stewart, Bob Manno and Daniel Fascinato. Gerard Ciarcia and Gianfranco Odino, Dave Tommasoni and Paul Beraldo, Kevin Lavallee and Mark Johnson, Tony Fiore and Joe Foglietta, John Vecchiarelli and Maurizio Vacca, Rico Rossi and Marco Favalli, Richard Bragnalo… the one who gave Milan the Scudetto…”
