La NHL sta progettando di organizzare un torneo internazionale a 4 squadre in stagione nel 2025
Come riportato sul proprio sito, la NHL sta progettando di organizzare un torneo internazionale a quattro squadre nella prossima stagione, che spera possa essere l’inizio di un programma internazionale a rotazione che includa la partecipazione alle Olimpiadi e alla Coppa del Mondo di Hockey.
Il commissario della NHL Gary Bettman ha annunciato l’idea dopo il secondo giorno di riunioni del Consiglio dei Governatori della Lega, martedì.
“It hasn’t been finalized but that’s what we’re focused on,” ha detto Bettman. Senza confermare, Bettman ha indicato che Stati Uniti, Canada, Svezia e Finlandia saranno i quattro Paesi partecipanti al torneo del 2025 che la Lega sta progettando di ospitare.
Il torneo sarebbe limitato ai soli giocatori della NHL e potrebbe svolgersi in più località, ma anche questo non è stato confermato. La NHL non organizza o partecipa a un torneo internazionale dalla World Cup of Hockey 2016. L’ultima volta che c’è stata una pausa nella stagione per un torneo è stata in occasione delle Olimpiadi di Sochi del 2014.
“It gives us a nice intro to best-on-best international and I hope at the same time we’re in a position to announce that we’ll have firm plans to tell you about what the World Cup will be because the ultimate goal is to have Olympics, two years later World Cup, two years later Olympics, two years later World Cup,” ha detto Bettman. “That’s the cycle we’re trying to get on, but we figured we’d try a little bit of an appetizer between now and then.”
Bettman ha dichiarato che la NHL continua a lavorare con il Comitato Olimpico Internazionale e la Federazione Internazionale di Hockey su Ghiaccio sui termini per la partecipazione alle Olimpiadi di Milano del 2026. Nessun accordo è stato finalizzato.
“We know it’s important to the players to go and we want to make it happen,” ha detto Bettman. “We’re going to be as flexible as we can but at some point. We’ve got to do a schedule for that season.”
Il vice-commissario della NHL Bill Daly ha dichiarato che la Lega ha in programma un incontro con il Comitato Olimpico Internazionale per la prossima settimana.
“It’s not about making a decision,” ha detto Bettman. “It’s trying to finalize the plans, some of which are beyond our control. It’s up to the International Olympic Committee and the IIHF to put things in place that need to be there and, not insignificantly, they have a lot of work to do on the arena. I don’t think they’ve actually begun construction on it, which is a matter of some concern.”
Bettman ha detto che le altre questioni aperte sono il pagamento per assicurare i contratti NHL dei giocatori e la fornitura di viaggi e alloggi per i giocatori e le loro famiglie a Milano. Queste spese sono state coperte dal CIO e dai comitati organizzatori locali nelle cinque precedenti Olimpiadi a cui la NHL ha partecipato (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 e 2014).
“But the thing I’m most focused on and concerned about is the building,” Bettman said. “Normally when you build a building for the Olympics for the hockey tournament it’s done a year in advance, and you have time to have events and test it and build the ice and do all of that. They’re projecting that it won’t be done until the fourth quarter of ’25, which is like six or eight weeks before the Olympics if they’re on time, and I think they’re already late. But that’s nothing we can control. It’s an IOC and a Milano-Cortina organizing committee issue.”
