Icelandic Women’s Championship: SR Wins in a Shootout
Second consecutive victory for Skautafélag Reykjavíkur (SR), which overcame Skautafélag Akureyrar in a hard-fought match that was decided in a shootout. This historic win marks the first time SR has ever won a game through penalty shots.
Following their victory against Fjölnir, SR returned to home ice for another tough challenge. The visitors from Akureyri took the lead at 09:15 with a goal by Silvia Björgvisdóttir. The equalizer came thanks to the young and promising Icelandic national team player Fridrika Magnúsdóttir, assisted by Alice Gasperini and Zuzana Sliacka. The first period ended 1-1, with a total of 9 shots to 7 in favor of SR.
In the second period, despite a clear shooting advantage (16-10), SR found itself trailing again as Freyja Rán Sigurjónsdóttir scored at 22:18, giving Akureyri a one-goal lead heading into the final frame.
SR’s comeback was completed in the third period when, at 55:49, Saga Sigurðardóttir capitalized on a rebound to beat the opposing goaltender, assisted by Briet Fridjónsdóttir and Gunnborg Jóhannesdóttir.
In overtime, SR showed much more confidence in the 3-on-3 format compared to the past, creating several dangerous chances but failing to find the game-winner. The match went to a shootout, extending into sudden death, where Gunnborg Jóhannesdóttir sealed the victory, securing a 3-2 final score.
SR continues to prove its athletic and technical growth, demonstrating its ability to compete at a high level in the Icelandic league.
The next game for the Reykjavik team is scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, at 20:45 CET, when they will face Fjölnir once again.
